Pneumonia After COVID Recovery

Pneumonia is basically the inflammation of the small air sacs of the lungs. It can be caused due to bacterial, viral or even fungal infection. This inflammation eventually leads to increased fluid accumulation in the lungs which results in breathing difficulty. Pneumonia after COVID recovery has become very common.

COVID-19 and Pneumonia

Due to the association of pneumonia to COVID, initially, Novel Coronavirus-infected Pneumonia (NCIP) was the name given to COVID-19. It was later renamed by WHO as COVID-19.

What exactly happens in COVID associated pneumonia?

Pneumonia as mentioned above will directly affect the small air sacs of the lungs. This will lead to improper functioning of the lungs. As we all know, the lung supplies oxygen to all parts of our body. And as the air sacs are affected, there will be oxygen insufficiency. When there is no oxygen, or when there is a reduced amount of oxygen, the tissues will get affected. These affected tissues will start breaking off and this will clog the lungs.

This will cause thickening of the lung walls. When there is thickening, the lungs will not relax or contract properly. This causes breathing difficulty.

Many people even after recovery are suffering from pneumonia. And maximum death reported is due to pneumonia associated with COVID. This can be cured if proper medical attention is given at the right time.

Symptoms

  1. Fever
  2. Chest congestion
  3. Persistent Cough
  4. Chills
  5. Breathlessness
  6. Rapid breathing
  7. Dizziness

If you have any of these symptoms contact your physician immediately and get yourself treated.

Treatment

Many clinical trials are going on to develop a potent drug to treat COVID associated pneumonia. Remdesivir is now being used for treating pneumonia. In severe cases, where the patient is unable to breathe properly an additional supply of oxygen might be necessary. In some cases, ventilator support might be needed.
