1. What do you mean by the CRP test?
CRP Test is that test which tells you about inflammation. CRP test when expanded reads c-reactive protein test. The protein produced by the liver is sent to your bloodstream when there is any inflammation in your body.
2. How is the test performed?
CRP test is similar to normal blood tests. A professional inserts a small needle into your vein. He collects the blood sample and it is then checked for CRP levels. The whole process takes utmost five minutes.
3. What is the normal CRP level?
- Less than 0.3 mg/dL: Normal
- 0.3 to 1.0 mg/dL: Normal or minor elevation
- 1.0 to 10.0 mg/dL: Moderate elevation
- More than 10.0 mg/dL: Marked elevation
- More than 50.0 mg/dL: Severe elevation
4. What if the CRP levels are elevated? What exactly does this mean?
If CRP level is high it can mean your body is affected with some kind of inflammation. CRP test does not confirm anything. It does not tell you what is affected and why. If you are tested with a high level of CRP, the doctor in charge may ask you to do other tests based on individual body conditioning. Cigarette smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise are among the factors that can contribute to higher levels of CRP. A high level of CRP in blood does not always mean a condition demanding treatment.
5. Why is the CRP level elevated in the case of Covid-19?
Cytokines are said to mediate and regulate immunity and inflammation. Though cytokines fight against microbes, an overproduction of the same may be harmful for lung functioning. The elevated level of CRP in patients severely affected with COVID -19 might indicate the overproduction of cytokines.
