COVID-19 Vaccination

 In this blog, I have tried to answer the most frequently asked questions regarding COVID-19 vaccination.

1. What are the possible side effects after getting vaccinated? 

          One should understand that not everyone will have noticeable effects after vaccination. It depends upon the body type of the person and several other factors. Following are the most common effects after vaccination  
        • Fever
        • Skin rash
        • Body Pain
        • Weakness
Though these are reported to be the most common effects, other effects like swelling, redness and inflammation at the site of injection can also be expected. In case of severe infection or prolonged fever, report to the nearest hospital immediately.

 2. Is it mandatory to have paracetamol after vaccination?
 
           Paracetamol, which is a drug that belongs to NSAID (Non-steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug) group is prescribed after vaccination to control fever, pain and inflammation. So it is better to have paracetamol as prescribed by the physician. 

3. For which condition is vaccination contraindicated?

      Vaccination is contraindicated for patients with a known history of drug allergy. Such patients should definitely get medical consent before getting vaccinated. 

4. If someone has had covid, how long should he/she wait before taking the vaccine? 

    According to the recent guidelines, a person can get vaccinated after 3 months from the day of recovery.

5. After getting vaccinated, can we stop taking precautions?

    Even after getting vaccinated, proper precautions should be taken. This is because there are many covid cases reported even after vaccination. 

6.  Can pregnant or lactating women take the vaccination?
                                      
    Post-delivery, lactating mothers are advised to take the vaccination, however, the choice is given for the pregnant women whether to take the vaccine or not. In the recent scientific articles, it is mentioned that vaccines approved by the Government of India or WHO is safe and can be administered to pregnant women. But it is always better to avoid risks, hence before getting vaccinated, get consent from your gynaecologist.

7. Can a person who is undergoing IVF take COVID-19 vaccination?
 
         According to recent scientific papers, it is considered safe for patients who are undergoing IVF treatment. No adverse reactions related to IVF has been reported so far.

8. Are there any particular tests that should be done before vaccination?

       Nothing in particular. However, patients who are having heart diseases, or are undergoing dialysis are advised to get medical consent before vaccination. Also, if you are pregnant or lactating, it is better to consult your gynaecologist before getting vaccinated. People who are having drug allergies should be very careful. Such patients should definitely consult their respective physicians before vaccination.

9. Which vaccine is better? Covishield or Covaxin?

      Both vaccines have been approved by the Government of India and are considered very safe. When coming to efficiency, International clinical trials of the Oxford-AstraZeneca revealed that the efficiency is 90% in the case of Covishield and 81% in the case of Covaxin.


10. Is there any other vaccine other than Covishield or Covaxin which is available in India?

      Sputnik V is an adenovirus viral vector vaccine for COVID-19 developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology. This is now available in India.
